Jaundice is common in newborn babies around 3 days old and gives them a yellowish, tanned appearance (the whites of the eyes may also be tinged with yellow). You will be encouraged to feed the baby often to help clear the jaundice. If the baby is still showing signs of jaundice after 2 weeks contact a doctor immediately, particularly if the baby’s stools are pale in colour. NICE guidelines recommend a blood test is usually needed to ascertain if a baby needs treatment.
