Oxytocin is a naturally occurring hormone and plays an important role in labour, birth and breastfeeding.
Artificial oxytocin may be given in a drip when labour is induced. The oxytocin stimulates contractions.
An injection containing oxytocin is often given at the end of labour to speed up the passing of the placenta and to help prevent heavy bleeding.
