Hipp Organic Baby Foods

HiPP leads the way
in baby milk safety

Making milk feeds less risky for your baby

You may have noticed that HiPP Organic baby milk packs do not carry instructions on preparing milk feeds in advance. This is because it is not safe to store made-up formula milk, so you should prepare your baby’s feeds freshly. Feeds should be used within two hours of preparation, with any left-over milk being discarded after feeding.

Making up a bottle

Experts have found that powdered milk formulas are not sterile and may contain harmful bacteria.  It is also possible to contaminate a bottle while making up a feed.  Bacteria can multiply in feeds and the longer they are kept the greater the risk to your baby.  Contamination with harmful levels of bacteria which can cause severe infection and illness.

In order to make up a feed safely:

  • Wash hands and ensure all equipment is thoroughly cleaned and sterilised following the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Boil fresh water and leave to cool for no more than 30 minutes.
  • Measure the required amount of water into the feeding bottle / beaker (referring to the feeding guide), and then add the required number of scoops of powder (using the scoop provided, add 1 level scoop of powder to each fluid ounce of water).  Level off the powder with the back of a clean dry knife, do not press the powder.
  • Place cap on the bottle / beaker and shake well until all the powder has dissolved.  Remove the cap and fit a sterilised teat if using a bottle.
  • Allow to cool, or stand in a jug of cold water, until it reaches body temperature (about 37°C) or below.  Always test the temperature of the milk before feeding to your baby.
  • Once you have finished feeding your baby then discard all leftover milk.

For convenience when you are out

The safest option is to make a bottle freshly for each feed. However, if you are out and about, an alternative is to take a flask of boiling water with you. When your baby needs feeding, prepare the feed using the water in the flask. So long as the water in the flask is above 70°C it will be hot enough to kill harmful bacteria.

Beware: Water hotter than 70°C can cause scalding, so be careful not to scald yourself or your baby whilst preparing milk feeds.
