I
am interested in the vitamin and mineral content of HiPP
baby foods as these are not listed on the jars. Is this because
these nutrients are destroyed in the heat/packing process?
|
|

|
- Vitamins and minerals cannot be added to organic babyfoods
(with the exception of thiamin in cereal-based foods and
vitamin C in some fruit juices) as the Organic Food Regulations
will not allow them to be added.
- Therefore, the only vitamins and minerals present in
the foods are those found naturally in the ingredients
used
in each variety. We use manufacturing methods that aim
to retain as much of these as possible, by using the
minimum amount of water necessary to cook the ingredients
and the
shortest cooking time possible. In this way you can be
certain that many of the naturally-occurring nutrients
are retained, and the losses are far less than would
be found with home-cooking.
- Although we do not list these values on the labels,
this doesn't mean there are none in the products.

How
can your jars of baby foods have such a long shelf life
but not contain any artificial preservatives? |

|
- The food in our jars is sterilised within vacuum-sealed
jars during the jarring process, and this sterilisation ensures
that no food spoilage will occur through growth of bacteria
or moulds. The integrity of the vacuum seal therefore guarantees
the quality of our products.
- This same guarantee of food safety could not be achieved
if you tried to preserve home-cooked baby foods. If vegetable
or fruit purees were put in jars at home, there would still
be air in the jar, which could result in the growth of
microorganisms such as moulds in the food. Also, you would
not be able to
achieve the same high temperatures during the heat preservation
stage as we do this under pressure.

Why,
when you look at baby milk packs and information leaflets
about baby milks, are there such strong statements on the
importance of breastfeeding? Surely this is not necessary? |
|

|
- Breastfeeding is best for babies and although the government
and health authorities recognise that not all babies can
be breastfed, they want to ensure that parents planning
to bottle feed have very carefully considered the matter.
Baby milk manufacturers are therefore required by law to
put this information, worded in a specific way, in their
literature and on their packs.
Breastfeeding is best for babies. Infant
milks are intended to replace breast milk when mothers cannot
or choose not to breastfeed. It is recommended that they
should be used only on the advice of a doctor, midwife, health
visitor, public nurse, dietitian or pharmacist.
If you are considering changing over from breastfeeding, talk to your
midwife, health visitor, or breastfeeding counsellor first, as it is
not easy to go back once you've made the change. Partial bottlefeeding
with an infant milk may reduce the supply of your breast milk.
The cost and social implications of using an infant milk should be considered
when deciding how to feed your baby. If you choose to bottle feed , it
is very important that you use an infant milk throughout the first year
(follow-on milks can be used from 6 months). Cow's milk is not recommended
as the main milk drink until after 1 year of age.
If you use an infant milk
or follow-on milk, it is important for your baby's
health that you follow all preparation instructions
very carefully.

Why do
you not have any fish varieties in your range?
|
|

|
- We do have 2 fish varieties that are exclusively sold
in Waitrose stores but unfortunately these are not organic.
- This is because organic fish is only available from fish
farms and in line with our philosophy we do not source
fish in this way but from the deep seas.
- We do however,
as with all HiPP baby foods test all the ingredients in
these recipes before use to ensure that they contain no
harmful chemical residues and all the other ingredients
in these recipes are organic.
