Week 29

There’s less room to move around now, but your baby is still very active – sometimes uncomfortably active!


Your baby's eyes are developing rapidly, and can now sense changes in light. The skin on your baby’s face is becoming smoother and less wrinkled as a layer of fat starts to form under the skin.


Your baby now weighs around 1.1kg (just under 2½ lb) and measures about 26cm (just over 10 inches) from crown to rump – about the size of a butternut squash.

    Feeling bigger than ever

    The ever-increasing size of your little passenger might be making things a bit uncomfortable at times. It's quite common to get aches and pains in your lower back - and that’s when the baby's not pressing on your bladder or sticking a foot in your ribs, or doing gymnastics!

     

    When your baby turns over, you might start to see (and feel) a head, foot or bottom travelling across your tummy. It’s a strange sensation. It can also be more of a challenge to get comfortable at night; lying flat on your back probably won't work very well anymore (and might even make you feel dizzy). Try lying on your side with extra pillows propped around you and one between your knees.

    Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids

    Between weeks 29 and 33, your baby's brain goes through a rapid development phase. As the brain's surface area expands, your baby's thought power is growing as well. At this stage, the brain starts to control things like body temperature and his or her first practice attempts at breathing.

     

    Because there's so much brain growth happening right now, it's extra-important for you to get enough Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids, which are essential for healthy brain development.

    Maternity leave

    You could start your maternity leave from this week, but remember that the sooner you begin your leave, the less time you will have after your baby arrives. You might want to weigh up all your options and discuss it with your partner, friends or family before making any decisions on when to begin your leave.
