First foods to try

Your baby's first foods should be easy to digest and free from common allergens, just in case. Steamed root vegetables, like carrot, parsnip and sweet potato, are naturally sweet and make a lovely smooth puree. Good first fruits include ripe, mashed banana, avocado and cooked apple or pear.


Our Pure range includes individual, wholesome ingredients like apples, pears, white carrot, peas and parsnips gently cooked and pureed for easy tasting at this early stage. 

This is also a good time to introduce the concept of grains. Our baby rice is gentle on little tummies, and you can mix it with breast milk or formula milk, plus perhaps a bit of fruit or veg puree to start with. (It's also gluten-free, which is important for babies under 6 months.)

For that first feed, then, pick a puree such as Simply Apples or Simply Pears – there are lots to choose from. Offer a tiny bit on a soft weaning spoon or a clean fingertip, and see what happens! If your baby’s tongue pushes it straight back out, that means you’re off the hook for a bit longer, so wash up and try again in a few days.


Once you’ve successfully introduced a few single foods, and you're confident that your baby is enjoying them, then the fun begins! Start mixing it up a bit. Why not try our cheesy spinach and potato bake or our Mango & Banana melba. There are lots to try from. Don’t be afraid to try bolder flavours – babies often adore them.

Avoiding food waste

Jars of baby food are easy to serve at room temperature. At the beginning, though, your baby won't even come close to finishing one off! To avoid waste, make sure you use a clean spoon and decant just what you need for a feed; the rest can be refrigerated (check product packaging for number of days). Don’t feed direct from the jar if saving some.


Food can be frozen providing all hands and utensils are thoroughly cleaned beforehand and the food is defrosted slowly in the refrigerator. Visit our weaning FAQs here.


If you're using baby food that's been opened and stored in the fridge and want to serve it warm, make sure you heat it up until it's piping hot, then cool it to a safe temperature before feeding your baby.

It's fine to use a microwave to heat baby food, as long as you stir the food well afterwards and leave it to stand for a minute or two before serving, checking the temperature to make sure it's not too hot.


How much milk?

As weaning progresses the amount of milk will reduce, with babies that are having 3 meals a day generally needing a total of around 500-600ml of infant milk a day.
