Frequently asked questions on baby care

Discover what needs to be considered when caring for your baby's skin, from whether our products are suitable for newborns to how to get rid of your baby's dry skin.

How can we help?

All of our HiPP Baby Care products are suitable for your little one from newborn. They've had their skin tolerance dermatologically approvedand have been specially developed for sensitive baby skin and contain no alcohol, microplastics or mineral oil.

Our HiPP Kids Care range, with animals on the front, is made with toddlers in mind, in terms of their composition and application.

You don't need to bathe your baby every day. But if they really enjoy it, there's no reason why you shouldn't.

As part of an evening routine, a regular bath, 2 to 3 times a week, or more often may help to improve their sleep.

Some babies enjoy a bath more than others, so give them a bath as frequently as works for you, making sure to‘top and tail’ in between by washing their face, neck, hands and bottom with some cotton wool dipped in warm water.

For tips on how to bathe your newborn, see our article.

Babies’ skin is much more sensitive compared with adult skin. Their outermost layer is thin and the skin barrier is immature, meaning it loses water, good fats and natural moisturizing factors easily.

In fact, water loss from the skin is greatest between the ages of 0 to 4 years old, so the skin at these ages may be prone to drying out easily. This is further impacted by the fact that infants have a higher surface area to body mass ratio than adults.

Lack of moisture can lead to skin dryness, irritation and inflammation. If not treated effectively, this dryness can persist and present in babies and children as flaky, scaly, itchy and sore skin.

It’s therefore important to protect babies’ skin by choosing a skincare range specifically made for sensitive skin. To be sure, look for a range where the skin tolerance is dermatologically approved.

Applying moisturizers regularly to keep it hydrated (e.g. after bathing, as part of a morning and evening routine) will also help clear up dry skin.

If you’re at all concerned, or if you notice changes in your baby’s skin, please consider consulting a healthcare professional. For more information on caring for your baby’s sensitive skin, read our expert article here.

You can start using a sensitive, dermatologist-approved baby hair wash from when your baby is a newborn. Look for a range where the skin tolerance is dermatologically approved.

Yes. We use organic almond oil and organic almond oil extract in our HiPP Baby Care and Kids Care range.

All of our HiPP Baby Care and Kids Care products have had their skin tolerance dermatologically approved and have been specially developed for sensitive baby skin and contain no alcohol microplastics or mineral oil.

Our products should be safe to use on eczema-prone skin; however, we would recommend testing on a small area of the baby’s skin first, as skin tolerance is individual.

All of the HiPP Baby Care and Kids Care products are vegan.

All of the HiPP Baby Care and Kids Care range of products are gluten-free.

We are particularly careful with the selection of ingredients we use in our products; we only add something if it’s gentle on baby’s skin

We don't use parabens in any of our products, as parabens (a group of preservatives) can, in individual cases, trigger allergic reactions in sensitive people.

Both SLS and SLES are detergents and frothers, used to clean and froth up when used. They’re both linked with skin irritation, so we do not use them in any of our products.

We don't use pure palm (kernel) oil in our HiPP Baby Care and Kids Care products. We do, however, use derivatives of these within our products; they have been tried and tested in skincare products and are very well tolerated.

In accordance with our brand philosophy, we only use sustainably produced organic palm oil across our product ranges.

Many families want their babies to smell nice. However, the raw materials in skincare products – especially oils – have a characteristic, often unpleasant, smell of their own. That is why we have decided to add a pleasantly discreet perfume to most HiPP skincare products. Consumer tests have shown that this subtle fragrance is desirable and scented products are preferred.

None of our Baby Care or Kids Care products are organic. The term ‘organic’ describes only the origin of the raw materials, but does not imply an extra high level of skin tolerance or suitability for sensitive skin.

All of our HiPP Baby Care products are suitable for your little one from newborn, they’ve had their skin tolerance dermatologically approved and have been specially developed for sensitive baby skin and contain no alcohol microplastics or mineral oil.

The ingredients in all our HiPP skincare products can always be found in full on the list of ingredients for each product. While all of our products have had their skin tolerance dermatologically approved, not everybody’s skin is the same and so it is recommended to carry out a patch test to see if a product causes any irritation or reaction.

If irritations occur or if an allergy is suspected, consult a dermatologist. They can investigate the cause of the skin reaction by identifying the substance that triggered it. The best prevention is then to avoid the substance or substances.

For all skincare products, we recommend that you test the tolerability of new products first on a small area of skin (e.g. the crook of your elbow).
