Baby Development: 8 Months Old

Your baby

  • Clear the decks for action! Even when babies are not yet crawling, they still manage to get around, grabbing everything within reach
  • Your baby will soon be picking up even the smallest crumbs or rubbish from the floor!

Babies of this age…

  • May lunge forward to reach things, nearly getting into a crawling position
  • May even begin to crawl
  • Might be saying “mamama” (unfortunately, this is often when they’re moaning!)
  • Can transfer objects from hand to the other, but haven’t yet learnt to let go of something
  • Like to ‘bang bang bang’ on a table or surface with a toy

Planning ahead

Things can change very quickly with babies. One minute they are sitting and happily playing, the next minute they start to crawl and get into everything! So it's best to plan ahead and buy safety items such as socket covers, door stops, door locks, corner cushions, stair gates, etc. so that they're on hand and ready for use when your little one takes that next big developmental leap.

Check-ups

The baby clinic at your GP's office is the best place to go to keep track of your baby’s weight and height, and ask any questions you have about key issues like development, weaning and sleeping. (It's also a great place to meet other new parents!)

Socialising

When you have a baby, it’s all too easy just to focus on their needs and forget your own social life. It might seem difficult, but it really is worth it to organise a babysitter so you can go out to see friends or have some “alone time” with your partner.

If you know any other families with babies, getting together with them will help your baby learn how to socialise. Meeting up with other mums is a great way to do this if you are home during the day.

Feeding when out and about

Babies have no preconceptions about whether their food should be warm or cold. If you can get them used to eating some meals at room temperature, this can pay big dividends when you're out and about and there's no microwave or hot water handy. (Our delicious organic pouch meals are especially convenient to toss in your bag when you're headed out the door!)

Finger foods

Most babies of this age will really enjoy finger foods. Make sure you never leave your baby alone when they’re eating, though.
