Ergobaby

If you’re getting ready to welcome a tiny new person into your world, then you’ve probably been thinking about the best baby carrier – ensuring you stay connected with your baby, while still freeing up your hands. But should you opt for a baby carrier, or a baby wrap? Let’s have a look at your choices and the pros and cons.

Which baby carriers are suitable for newborns?

Ergobaby carriers are designed to support both physical and emotional wellbeing in babies and parents. All our ergonomic baby carriers are certified by the Campaign for Healthier Backs (AGR) and our newborn range is specially engineered to provide the best physical support for your tiny baby in the safest way possible.

We offer both baby wraps and baby carriers, giving you a wealth of choices when it comes to your newborn.

The stretchy baby wrap

Our Aura Baby Wrap  is available in two versions, both cosy, soft and stretchy – one knitted and one mesh. These wraps support your little one in the key areas and use helpful coloured guides to help you tie the wrap properly for optimum ergonomic support. Our Aura Wrap can be used from birth up to around 12 months of age or from 3.2 kg to 11.3 kg.

The newborn baby carrier

Our Ergobaby Embrace is a more structured support, ideal for all those who want to keep things simple and cosy in the early days, weeks and months. Easy to put on, the Embrace baby carrier distributes your baby’s weight evenly across your back and automatically holds your little one in the ergonomic spread-squat position - without any tying. This newborn baby carrier can be used from a weight of 3.2 kg to 11.3 kg, i.e. from birth until around one year old.

A baby carrier from birth through toddlerhood

The brand new ergonomic Omni Deluxe, Adapt and Aerloom baby carriers can also be used from birth and grows with your baby right through toddlerhood. Simply adjust the width of the panel and the headrest so that your child is always supported in an age-appropriate way. This means you can use these carriers over a longer period of time and discover the world together with your little wonder.

The Omni Deluxe is available in three fabric choices: either completely made of breathable mesh material or in a cotton or linen version. The integrated headrest buttons are hidden for a more streamlined design and there’s storage space – a total of six compartments plus an elastic band to attach a muslin or dummy clip. And if you need some light weather protection or privacy for baby, the Omni Deluxe also has an integrated hood. The upgrades to the Omni Deluxe also make it more comfortable for you as your baby grows, ensuring the weight is evenly distributed across your body – a benefit that becomes more obvious the bigger your baby gets!

Baby carrier for newborns: what you should look out for?

A baby carrier is a big investment, so to round off this article we’re going to list the key features you should look out for when choosing a newborn baby carrier.

Ergonomic design

A baby carrier for newborns must be designed in such a way that your newborn sits in the ergonomic spread-squat position as soon as you have them in the carrier. This means that the thighs are well supported, and their knees are higher than their bum. This helps ensure the developmentally appropriate, slightly rounded shape of the newborn's back.

Head and neck support

Your baby carrier should provide suitable head and neck support – ideally, support that is adjustable so that the carrier still works for you as your baby grows.

High-quality, breathable material

A baby carrier for newborns should be made of soft, breathable material to prevent overheating and heat/perspiration rashes. Mesh offers the ultimate breathability and so do natural materials like cotton and linen.

Appropriately sized for baby

The carrier panel should finish no higher than level with the middle of the ear for newborns to ensure it doesn’t cover their head or face. If it’s higher than that, it’s too big for your baby.

Easy handling

Choose a carrier that is easy and intuitive to put on and take off, especially if you are new to babywearing. You can find all our instruction videos on our YouTube channel and more on our Instagram. Have a look before you buy so you can see how easy it is to do!

Safety and ergonomics

Make sure that your baby carrier meets general safety and ergonomics standards. This can be indicated, for example, by the certificate from the Aktion Gesunder Rücken (AGR) association or the International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI).

Age- and development-appropriate adjustability

The best investment is one you can use for longer – so choose a carrier that grows with your baby. Did you know that the special technology of Ergobaby’s baby carriers ensures that newborns have a particularly deep seat for a developmentally appropriate position? On our Adapt and Omni models, the two Velcro fastening straps on the waistbelt provide this fit, which you won't find on any other carrier.
