Teething tips from the parents at HiPP
Sometimes it helps to hear from other parents who’ve already been through it and can pass on their experiences! So, we rounded up our HiPP parents and asked them for their hot tips on all things weaning.
Teething can be such a challenging time. Your poor baby is struggling with teething pain, but the rest of the family is struggling with a grumpy baby! We talked to our HiPP parents for their top tips to get through the grizzly days and sleepless nights.
Teething toys
There are plenty of teethers on the market, but all our parents agreed the best teethers are those you can make cold. “Popping the teether into the fridge really seemed to help ease those sore gums,” says Hannah.
Kirsten agrees: “My saviours were the teething rings with water in. Put them in the freezer and give them to your baby (after resting them on the side for a while) to suck and chew on.” Or, if your baby prefers a softer texture, Emma suggests keeping a clean, damp flannel in the fridge for your baby to chew on when they are in pain.
Frozen or chilled soft fruits and vegetables like raspberries, cucumber and spinach were recommended by various HiPP parents who all felt their little ones benefited from chewing or sucking on something cold.
(Warning - don't give your baby anything directly from the freezer and always supervise your little one).
Pain relief
There’s some debate over the efficacy of teething granules but in Scott’s family, they were a must. Jenny used baby paracetamol for her little one, and other HiPP parents also recommended Calpol and Neurofen to ease teething pain.
Helen’s little one really suffered with teething, and she found nothing particularly helped except time and lots of love. “Be patient,” she advises. “If your baby is around teething age and being a bit more grizzly than usual, it’s no wonder. Nothing seemed to really help with Megan sadly, and I feel like we tried everything! Just enjoy the extra cuddles that they’re going to need….and pray your next baby is born with a full set of teeth, which apparently can happen!”
Sore skin – all over!
Teething babies can be very dribbly, and if the saliva has prolonged contact with your baby’s skin it can make it sore. Emma recommends the dribble bibs with textured ends, which her baby enjoyed chewing on.
Steph’s little one really suffered with nappy rash while teething. “We found Metanium nappy rash ointment was really helpful and Ashton and Parsons teething powder helped too." Emma also felt that teething seemed to affect her baby’s nappies. “We had to be really delicate and gentle during nappy changes because they were so sore.”
Across the board, parents agreed it’s a tough time, but you’ll get through it with patience and lots of love. Just keep telling yourself – it’s just a phase!
