Teething Top Tips - A complete guide to teething

Not all babies will experience symptoms during teething some teeth may simply appear. But if your baby is in distress, there are some ways to make it easier for them (and you!). We’ve compiled a quick list of three things to try to help your teething baby.

Not all babies will experience symptoms during teething some teeth may simply appear. But if your baby is in distress, there are some ways to make it easier for them (and you!). We’ve compiled a quick list of three things to try to help your teething baby. Of course, every baby – and every day! – is different, so you may need to try out all the things on this list to find something that works for you.

Cold and pressure

When a baby’s gums are swollen due to teething, providing something chilled to ease the inflammation can really help. They could chew on a clean cloth, soaked in cooled boiled water. You could also try teething toys, which can often be chilled in the fridge for an extra soothing effect (check the packaging for instructions).

Chilled fruit is often a hit for hungry teething babies who have already started weaning. You can also try your (clean) finger – but make sure your nails are trimmed and your baby is willing! Some people also recommend a chilled metal teaspoon, but be careful – the edges can be quite severe. And of course always supervise your baby when they have anything they could put in their mouths.

Distract

It’s often easier for your little one to cope with the pain of teething when there are other distractions to interest them. Playtime, singing, some time outdoors or fun in the bath can all help take your baby’s mind off their teeth and bring a smile to their faces. Try combining something to chew on with sensory play – for example, by putting their teething toys into a bowl and letting them choose which one they want to chew on.

When it comes to shopping for teething toys, opt for food grade silicone and BPA free teethers. Food grade silicone (FDA Approved ) comes from naturally derived material, passes the ‘Goldilocks’ test (not too hard, not too soft – it’s just right!), can be chilled in the fridge and is easily cleaned in a dishwasher or steriliser – perfect for teething babies .

Lots of teething toys and weaning spoons are made from this material. Some teethers also have textured surfaces that can provide extra relief for little gums.

Comfort

Many babies just want to be held and soothed by comforting cuddle power. Carrying them around the house in a baby carrier or rocking the little one in a chair can also help comfort and relax both of you when they’re feeling miserable. You could also try a foot massage.

Babies love a foot massage and it might even help them sleep on those nights when sleep is hard to come by. Use your thumbs to massage the balls of your baby’s feet, and up the underside of their toes using a firm but gentle pressure.

Experiment to see what they like – and don’t forget ‘this little piggy’ while you’re down there.

If foot massages are a hit, you could also try a full body massage with a cold-pressed oil or vegetable oil.

You can give your baby a massage at any time of the day, although many parents like to incorporate this with a bath and/or bed-time routine to help relax baby for sleeping.

Dealing with the side-effects of teething

Dribbling is one sure sign of teething, and it can bring about a discomfort all of its own! Try to keep saliva at bay by regularly replacing wet bibs and clothes, gently wiping around your baby’s mouth and chin, and using a barrier oil like coconut oil to protect your little one’s skin from getting sore.

Some bibs are better than others for mopping up dribble, so opt for a super absorbent soft teething bib or dribble bib to help keep baby’s chest dry and keep teething rash at bay.
